The V formation reduces wind resistance and helps keep the flock coordinated. ![]() With the turbulence wave produced by each flying goose lifting the fellow goose behind her, the geese can conserve less energy and undertake sustainable flight. Thus, each goose’s work is built on the back of another’s. As the goose flies, the flapping produces swirls of air.įor the other geese trailing behind, flying off-center gives them a lift from the goose flying in front of them, and the hundreds of migrating geese in the sky form a V. Thus they need to adapt to flying mechanisms to aid a longer flying range-the V-shaped flying benefits in energy conservation and efficient tracking and communication. Geese undertake an annual migration at the onset of winters and depart to warmer lands. As much surreal as the site would seem of the beautiful pink padded creatures flapping their way in choreographed motions, the science behind the same is fascinating. Usually, the geese in flight would assume their V shapes. ![]() As per the typical migration routes, flocks usually take the flight to the north during the spring season and return to the arctic zones. The Canada Geese undertake their annual migration, cackling and honking along their journey. It is guided by three concepts of separation, alignment, and cohesion, and the result is an effortless yet ecstatic flying that otherwise would be very complicated to recreate. While such nuanced coordination systems might sound like a heavily controlled mechanism, flocking among birds is an emergent behavior that does not involve central guidance. They add their input based on observing the environment for potential threats or distressing events and communicate it to the collective intelligence system. Every member of the troupe has a dual role of being a leader and a supporter. ![]() Similarly, geese adopt a collective sense-making model to move in flock or skein. There is always the potential threat of predators in the environment, and in the face of adversity, a cooperative and combined effort enables the species to function better. And there you get the marvel of geese: A Flock!Ī survival instinct drives such a collective mode of functioning. Now, magnify this same communication system at the level of 20-30 birds communicating. Usually, the message that comes out is different (and bizarre) from what was told to the first individual. Like fish, birds adapt various survival strategies to survive and protect themselves from predators.Īndrea Alfano, who authored Cornell Lab of Ornithology, correlates flocking and the childhood game where a message is relayed through whispers along with a group until it finally reaches the last individual. A more particular terminology for geese in V formation is “wedge.” Why Do Geese Form A Flock? Thus, one’s imagination could enable them to draw a parallel between the image of weaving the exquisite wool along its length to that of the graceful geese weaving a long trail as they flow past the sky in their exemplary “V” design like a stretching piece of elegant thread. It is a term that is also used about the length of yarn. The word gaggle, a term of venery mainly, refers to the crackling sound made by the raucous geese as they stroll in herds. Skein, on the other hand, is the geese in flight. While flocking on the ground, the geese would be called a “gaggle,” “Skein” would be the appropriate term for the mob as they weave into delicate formations in the air. However, in the English vocabulary, the feathered vertebrates have specific designations for their troupes: Host of Sparrow, a peacock in musters, a siege of herons, and a covey of partridges are some examples from the rich collection.įurthermore, the humble goose attains different names as they swirl between the fertile grounds and the misty skies. It refers to a group of animals, more commonly birds. Flock is a generic term referring to a collective.

For example, a visit to the dentist is considered preventative care, but teeth whitening is not. Qualified vision and dental expenses are those used for preventative care. Source: IRS What are qualified vision and dental expenses? Limited-purpose flexible savings account (LPFSA)Įligible dental, vision, and some post-deductible expensesĮligible dental, vision, and healthcare expenses Must have a high deductible health plan (HDHP)?Ĭan be used with a health savings account (HSA) The table below summarizes the differences between a LPFSA and an FSA. However, if you contribute too much to these accounts, you could lose all your funds at the end of the year. This would result in a $6,500 tax deduction if both accounts are fully funded in 2022. This allows pretax dollars from the HSA to continue to grow while pretax LPFSA funds pay for vision and dental expenses.Įmployees can contribute up to $2,850 to their LPFSAs in 2022, up $100 from 2021.The HSA contribution limit for an individual is $3,650 in 2022. Having a LPFSA is an exception to that rule.Īn individual can use their LPFSA funds to pay for vision and dental expenses before tapping into their HSA funds. You typically aren’t allowed to contribute to both an HSA and FSA at the same time. Some employers may allow you to use your LPFSA to pay for qualified medical expenses after you reach your insurance deductible.Īnother key difference is that a LPFSA can be paired with a health savings account (HSA). On the flip side, health FSAs can cover a variety of medical expenses allowed by the IRS, such as acupuncture, birth control pills, and monthly menstrual supplies. A LPFSA can typically only cover qualified vision and dental expenses. The difference between a limited-purpose FSA and a FSA is what they cover. If you contribute $2,500 for the year, your taxable income drops to $97,500. Let’s say you earn $100,000 and have a LPFSA. Every penny that you contribute to these accounts can reduce your taxable income. That means the money goes from your paycheck to the FSA before taxes are withheld. What’s the difference between FSA and LPFSA?īoth of these accounts allow employees to make pretax contributions. This account is exclusive to individuals who work for a company that offers limited-purpose FSAs. ![]() Retired individuals and those who are unemployed also don’t qualify for a LPFSA. However, they can open a health savings account (HSA) if they have a qualified HDHP and want to gain tax benefits for health expenses. Self-employed individuals do not qualify for an LPFSA or a traditional health flexible savings account (FSA). An LPFSA covers the employee, their spouse, and any eligible dependents. This account is only available if an employer offers it. Who qualifies for a LPFSA?Įmployees with a qualified high-deductible healthcare plan (HDHP) and health savings account (HSA) may choose to have a limited-purpose FSA. In some cases, you can use your LPFSA to pay for out-of-pocket expenses related to other qualified medical expenses after you reach your insurance deductible.īelow, we will discuss how a LPFSA works and what expenses qualify. Unlike a regular health FSA, this employer-sponsored account is primarily used to pay for qualified dental and vision expenses. These accounts are typically combined with a health savings account (HSA) to help families increase their healthcare savings during the year. A limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA) is a pretax account only available to employees enrolled in a qualified high-deductible healthcare plan (HDHP). ![]() A general assessment of market abuse policies and procedures does not achieve this.Īlthough the risk of certain types of market manipulation may be lower for this sector, others may still be relevant. It enables a firm to document all the market abuse risks that apply to its business and consider what monitoring it needs to detect them, in a structured and comprehensive way. If done properly, undertaking a risk assessment is an effective and efficient way of achieving this. To maintain effective arrangements, systems and procedures to detect and report suspicious orders and transactions, firms need to understand how they could facilitate market abuse. Two firms split out different types of manipulation in their risk assessments, considered how the risks differed depending on trading platforms and trading method and documented why specific risks were less relevant for their businesses. Two firms had documented an assessment of the policies and procedures for market abuse, rather than an assessment of the market abuse risks applicable to the business.Īll these firms offer CFDs and/or spread bets in non-equity asset classes, but there was little consideration of these in their market abuse risk assessments and limited detail about market manipulation in all asset classes. Firms that could do so had a market abuse risk assessment which documented that they had considered different market abuse risks. However, not all firms could demonstrate they had considered all market abuse risks relevant to their business. While this article draws specific observations from our CFD peer review, the themes of that edition are equally relevant. You should read this edition in conjunction with Market Watch 69. Given these risks, our review aimed to improve our understanding of CFD providers’ arrangements to identify and report potential market abuse and raise standards. We are also aware of a potential increase in a type of manipulative behaviour where spread bets and CFDs are being used to realise profits following manipulative practices in the underlying market via other firms. They are a major source of Suspicious Transaction and Order Reports (‘STORs’). ![]() In this Market Watch, we discuss our observations and findings from our recent market abuse peer review into firms that offer Contracts for Difference ('CFDs') and spread bets (‘CFD providers’).ĬFDs and spread bets are particularly vulnerable to being used for insider dealing due to the speculative and leveraged nature of the products. ![]() Take it slow and stay close to the stairs. Otherwise, try to find sections of short wall to use to limit how many things you're fighting. Lair is nastiest when you get stuck in an open area - if you have a wand of digging, you can make a narrow corridor to fight things in. If you hit something particularly nasty in dungeon after 12, feel free to run back up and try Lair. As long as you run away before you fight, you'll probably be ok. When I get down to around D4 or 5 I start read ID'ing a couple scrolls, especially ones I have stacks of 3 or more of. Especially use curing pots if you get confused - conf reduces your SH to 0 and you really don't care much about poison. You should be able to kill just about anything pretty easily other than stuff that might hit you really hard, like an early two-headed ogre.ĭon't hesitate to use might or agility or healing pots if things look dicey - you can't take them with you. ![]() If something looks like it might be tough (name is red? maybe name is yellow and you aren't sure what it is?) back into a corridor and use a god ability, either the shield one from TSO or one of the basic fighty ones from Oka. It's better to pull things back so the noise you make fighting them doesn't attract other interested nasties. Any time you see an enemy, and I mean ANY TIME YOU SEE AN ENEMY, back up a few steps, into a narrow corridor if you can. Keep resistance rings just in case and remember to swap to them if you see, for example, an ice beast, an ifrit, or a fire giant.ĭon't fight more than one thing at a time. You want ac, ev, or slaying, the more the better. Basic stat (str, dex, int) rings are usually bad. Necklaces you want to watch for are: reflection, faith, spirit shield, and regeneration. I generally worship TSO, although Oka is fine too - either way, once you start worshipping them, start training invocations. If your eveningstar isn't flame, frost, or crushing, I'd rebrand it when you can. I personally save enchant weapon scrolls for an eveningstar or a demon whip. You'll have to reset your skill training if you find a morningstar or an eveningstar. Same thing with an eveningstar or a demon whip. If you find a morningstar, use it as long as your attack speed remains "average" once you equip it. If you get past Lair and either your Int or Dex is below 9, you can put some stats there in order to get them to 9, but otherwise I'd just level strength. Level strength to start with and wear the heaviest armor you can find. Hit s so that it sets your M&F skill training to max at whatever flail maxes at. Hit s so that it sets shield skill training to max at 15. Go into your inventory and look at your shield. Turn off throwing, unarmed, spellcasting, and stealth. If you don't want to manually train your skills, start by turning M&F from plus to star so it levels faster. I wouldn't bother with a whip unless you find one of elec or venom really early on. There are quite a few things that other races need to look for that they just get innately (rPois being the key one for the early game, rElec, flight, and torment resistance being pretty key for extended.) |
